Progress Report.

Updated 2nd June 09

Very few of our Catholic young people regularly go to church.
Consequently, a lot of Phil’s work involves outreach to schools and organising events and activities that are not directly church based.

Feb to June 08 Post Confirmation group (age 14-15 years).
Regular weekly meetings for the existing Post Confirmation group continued up to the start of exam period.
June 08 Disco for yr 7 pupils (age 11-12 years).
The main aim of this disco was to make contact and develop relationships with the younger teenagers. Two local catholic primary schools agreed to send invitation letter which included a combined disco ticket and ‘Contact Details’ form to former pupils. The thirty young people attending the disco handed in their tickets thereby providing us with their contact details for future events.
June to July 08 Support to two 2008 confirmation groups:

Phil provided support for both Our Lady of Compassion’s and St Jerome’s Confirmation programmes. Total of 42 young people.

National Catholic Conference:

Phil and The Youth Ministry ran the Youth Stream for the National Catholic Conference in Southport. Programme included guest speakers and a Christian Mime artist, video, discussion and prayer time. Attended by 20 people age 9 to 16.

The National Catholic Conference committee said. “……You did a fantastic job. I wanted to reiterate my thanks to you once again as I know you took it all on last June with very little notice..…. it would be great to work and collaborate again on a venture.”

A couple of parents admitted that their ‘older’ teenage children had only intended to stay for the morning session and would then go into town for the afternoon. However, they enjoyed the morning so much that they stayed to the end.

July 08 With support from the Youth Ministry Team, Phil ran a retreat for 40 pupils age 12-13.
August 08 Phil assisted with the music ministry on the annual Archdiocesan Youth Pilgrimage to Lourdes. Hundreds of young people from the Liverpool Archdiocese, including some from the Formby area took part in this pilgrimage.
October 08 ‘Big Father’ Christian Youth festival.

This was an ambitious event organised by the Youth Ministry team. Aimed at yrs 8 to 11 pupils (age 12-16 years) it took place on a Sunday through the afternoon and into the evening. Posters and invitations were sent out to all local schools; Catholic and State, and to all the year 8 pupils who had attended the Year 7 disco the previous academic year.

The programme included:
• Times for Prayer, and Worship including contemporary music.
• Drama provided by a local Baptist church which included audience participation.
• Guest speakers, including two Christian witness talks by young people, one Catholic and one Baptist, about their commitment to, and experience of God).
• Three short video’s based around reconciliation including one of The Simpsons. Discussion times.
• Evening - Chippy supper and entertainment.
We received help from local C of E and Baptist churches.

November 08 Dove Trust: The Dove Trust is a local ecumenical youth initiative that has been running for many years. It is funded by grants and the local churches in Formby and owns a hall near the town centre. Over the last year it has come in for some criticism and has started to re-evaluate its purpose and methods. We see some overlap in what it is trying to achieve and our Youth Minister has offered to join a committee to help in its planning for the future.

Building Links with local Catholic primary schools: The two local catholic primary schools have been very helpful to us by using their ‘old’ address lists to enable us to reach the current year 7 & 8 secondary school pupils who we have had difficulty reaching any other way.

December 08 Yr 7 & 8 Christmas Disco. Aim: to re-establish links with Yr 8 pupils and to gain contact details for Yr 7 Pupils. A success with about 20 participants.
Holy Family Catholic High School: Phil took two assemblies at Holy Family High School and is looking to develop ongoing activities.
Phil has developed a modern programme of three sessions on ‘Preparation for the Sacrament of Reconciliation’.
Jan - Feb 09 Action For Justice programme:
Phil has developed and is running a weekly ‘Justice and Peace’ after school club called ‘Action for Justice’ in Holy Family High School.

The annual Formby Street Nativity:
The event was organised by Churches Together in Formby and attracted around 2000 people of all ages to the town centre. Many young people were involved in the event including one from St Jerome’s parish who was taking the part of Mary and our Youth Minister was to be seen as a noisy reveller at the Inn. The high street was once again closed to traffic as the Nativity story was retold with songs and lots of entertaining drama. We’ve always had a real donkey for Mary plus numerous goats and sheep but this year a real camel was added to the cast.

Away-Day for the Youth Ministry Team plus guests.

The Youth Ministry Team plus a teenager and a few other invited guests with direct experience of working with young people were invited to:

Reflect on experience of the past year and on views of young people.

Learn from the experiences of others.

Develop a consensus for the direction and focus of future action.

Some Key Findings from the day:
• Some young people prefer to be engaged in events or groups that have a practical slant to Christianity e.g. fundraising for charity.
• We need more opportunities for young people to evangelise other young people.
• A significant number of young people become disillusioned with the church at a much earlier age than we had originally thought.
• A significant number of Catholics primary school pupils and their parents have little or no links with church and whilst they are happy to engage with their children on preparation for Sacraments in school, do not feel comfortable entering a church.
• The biggest obstacle to young people encountering God in their lives appears to be that they do not see Church Liturgy (e.g. Mass) as being relevant to them.

March - May 09 Phil continues to support the pupils of Holy Family 'Justice & Peace' group.

Phil helped develop and plan age-appropriate readings and music for the OLOC Primary School 1st Communion Candidates. The Mass following the day of 1st Holy Communion drew over 100 children to the Children's Liturgy (Little Church)

In addition Phil is supporting a music teacher who is teaching children at St Jerome's Primary School and bringing their large children's choir to support a monthly Family Mass. he will be doing similar for OLOC

Preparations are under way to start a Family Mass at Our Lady's. Phil is helping to co-ordinate this and is a key link-person between the OLOC Primary school and the OLOC Children's Liturgy Group.

Phil is supporting a regular Praise and Worship session which has been started and is held at the Gild Hall Activity Centre. (Usually 3rd Sunday of month)
Phil is helping to run the new OLOC Confirmation Group  (There are 17 Candidates). As part of the programme he is organising a one day retreat for the Group.
June 09 Phil is organising a music training session that will bring together the music leaders in OLOC & St Jerome's Primary school, and OLOC  & St Jerome's Folk Groups. Lively modern music, some with actions, will be presented and taught. This will help the parishes and school to provide music at a monthly Sunday Family Mass that will be familiar and fun for the children.
Phil is helping to co-ordinate a monthly Family Mass at OLOC. Readers and singers are being sought from OLOC's Primary School, Children's Liturgy group, Brownies and Cubs.
Phil will be visiting the Brownies to teach them some songs that will be used at the OLOC Family Mass
21st June 09 First OLOC Family Mass 11:00 a.m. With Youth involvement in singing, readings & bidding prayers.
4th July 09 OLOC Confirmation Group Retreat Day

A few 'Outcomes' from the Away-Day:

Look at ways of setting up links with primary schools and parishes to develop more ‘youth oriented’ liturgy’s ideally on a monthly basis. Involve more young people in ‘prime-time’ Sunday masses. (N.B. This isn’t just about music; Very few young people listen to Folk music these days)
Engage more young people in specific charitable activities and Christian events.
Set up a Post-Confirmation group ASAP (i.e. in the brief time between the end of the 2009 course and the start of the summer holidays).
